Sleess Nine Fangs trembled as he approached the summit, his offering clutched closely to his heart. Every step forward increased his sense of dread, and for the hundredth time, he barely suppressed the urge to flee back down the mountain. Suddenly, a sound like thunder shook the ground, and he felt the voice of the Psion pierce his mind. Time seemed to slow, then all was black.

When Sleess Nine Fangs awoke, he was back at the foot of the mountain. Lord Nizak, the Psion, had spoken. Sleess Nine Fangs knew what had to be done. The Crucible must change—it must be prepared.
